Categorical status of auxiliaries
This parameter considers the categorical status of auxiliaries (Aux) with respect to lexical verbs.
Types:
AuxNotV: The language does not have auxiliary verbs.1
AuxVInfl: Auxiliary verbs are verbs, and the inflection of lexical and auxiliary verbs is the same.
AuxNotVInfl: Auxiliaries are verbs, but the inflection of auxiliaries is not identical to that of lexical verbs.2
Aux=VNoInfl: Auxiliaries are verbs, and neither auxiliaries nor lexical verbs are inflected.
1: Despite not having auxiliary verbs from a morphological or syntactic perspective, the language may use words that fulfill the semantic function of auxiliaries. For example, a language may express tense, aspect, and/or mood by the use of adverbials or a specific type of noun, such as using ‘tomorrow’ or ‘later’ to mark the future tense.
2: This includes the possibility that auxiliary may not be inflected at all. The differences in inflection should be detailed in the commentary.
